|A grief counselor is a valued assistant and a compassionate listener and advisor to adults and children who have experienced the loss of a loved one (family member, collegue or friend), to individuals who are reacting to trauma in their lives -- such as death, terminal illness, suicide, serious accidents, etc.
Grief conselors are also called in to help people cope in cases of other events such workplace downsizings, divorce, separation or violence.
Social workers, outreach workers, and dedicated grief counselors can now learn these grief counselor skills now through online grief counselor training.
This training available over the Internet and the training can be done at home and at a time to suit the learner.
Instructors are usually mental health professionals and the course materials and lessons are structured for ease of learning, using step-by-step modules, multimedia and feedback from the instructor by email or online chat.
Some courses have a number of practical sessions which involve personal attendance at the training institute, but apart from that all the training can be undertaken at home -- as long as you have a computer and Internet connection there.
At the end of your course, you will be awarded a certificate which is very similar to that awarded to fulltime on-campus students of the grief counseling course.
One word of caution: before undertaking your online course, check to ensure it is accredited by your local state regulatory agency or board.
